Interstate 70 in Lakewood still shows structural damage from a devastating trucking accident that occurred on April 25, 2019. While traffic was at a dead stop due to a car accident a few miles ahead on Interstate 90 eastbound, a semi-truck loaded with lumber, driven by Texas resident Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, collided with a combined twenty-eight vehicles, and igniting a catastrophic accident scene.
Four of the twenty-eight vehicles were also 18-wheelers, and the other twenty-four were cars. It is unclear at this time exactly what caused the accident, as Aguilera-Mederos is currently being held by the Lakewood Police Department in four counts of vehicular homicide after four of the ten who suffered bodily injuries later succumbed to the extent of their traumatic injuries.
Aguilera-Mederos’ brother, Daniel Aguilera, spoke with him by phone and reported that there was a mechanical failure with the breaks. The issue here is that even if there had been a malfunction in the brakes, Aguilera-Mederos must have been operating his semi-truck at a high rate of speed, when considering the stopped traffic, to cause one of the worst motor vehicle accidents the city of Lakewood has ever seen. Even if the evidence does show that there was a break malfunction, Lakewood Police Department Agent Ty Countrymen says Aguilera-Mederos would still face the four vehicular homicide charges.
One onlooker, Josh McCutcheon, caught the entire collision on camera and was stunned by what he saw. He then reported the efforts of Darin Barton, who was nearby when the crash occurred. Barton pulled as many as four survivors from the burning vehicles while the fire department worked tirelessly to put out the flames and determine which victims were in which vehicles.
The investigation was delayed for a period of time due to continued hot spots and burning embers. Furthermore, the Lakewood Police Department has continued to investigate what caused the 28 vehicles involved to ignite in the first place, but there are few answers at the moment.
Despite facing four vehicular homicide convictions, law enforcement has stated that they do not believe that drug or alcoholic inebriation played a part in the cause of the wreck. It has also been reported by police that Aguilera-Mederos has continued to cooperate with law enforcement.
